Qualified Leads
Definition
A qualified lead is a prospect who fits your ideal customer profile and has shown enough intent or need to be worth active sales follow-up. Leads are typically graded as marketing-qualified (MQL) when they meet interest thresholds, then sales-qualified (SQL) once a rep confirms budget, authority, need, and timeline.
Why it matters
Not every lead deserves a sales call. Chasing unqualified prospects burns rep time, inflates pipeline with deals that never close, and demoralizes a sales team. Qualification is the filter that keeps your funnel honest — it separates casual browsers from buyers who can actually purchase. Companies that define qualification tightly close more of what they pursue and forecast far more accurately.
For B2B teams, qualified leads are the currency that aligns marketing and sales. When both sides agree on what “qualified” means, marketing stops throwing volume over the wall and sales stops complaining about lead quality. A well-tuned CRM enforces that shared definition automatically, routing only ready leads to reps and nurturing the rest. That alignment is often worth more than any increase in raw lead count.
How it works
Qualification usually runs in two stages:
| Stage | Owner | Test |
|---|---|---|
| MQL | Marketing | Fits ICP and hits an engagement threshold (demo request, pricing view) |
| SQL | Sales | Rep confirms budget, authority, need, timeline (BANT) |
Scoring models assign points for firmographic fit (industry, company size, role) and behavioral intent (pages visited, emails opened, content downloaded). When a lead crosses the threshold, the CRM flags it and routes it to the right rep. The best systems feed closed-won and closed-lost outcomes back into the model, so scoring sharpens over time and reps spend their hours on the deals most likely to close.
