Internal Links
Definition
Internal links are hyperlinks that connect one page of a website to another page on the same domain, helping users navigate and helping search engines discover pages, understand site structure, and distribute ranking authority.
Why it matters
Internal links are one of the few ranking levers you fully control — no outreach required. They do three jobs at once. For users, they guide the journey from an educational blog post toward a product or conversion page, improving engagement and paths to pipeline. For search engines, they act as discovery paths: crawlers follow internal links to find and index pages, so an important page with no internal links is easily missed. And they distribute authority — the ranking equity a page earns from external backlinks flows through its internal links to the pages it points to, letting you concentrate strength on the pages that matter most.
For B2B sites, strategic internal linking is often the highest-ROI technical SEO work: it costs nothing but publishing discipline and can lift rankings across a whole content silo.
How it works
An internal link has two parts that matter for SEO: the destination (which page it points to) and the anchor text (the clickable words). Descriptive anchor text — “technical SEO audit” rather than “click here” — tells search engines what the target page is about and reinforces its relevance for those terms.
Best practices that reliably help:
- Link from high-authority pages to important ones so equity flows where you want rankings.
- Build topic clusters — a pillar page linking to related subpages, each linking back — to signal topical authority.
- Use descriptive, varied anchor text instead of generic phrases or the exact same phrase every time.
- Keep important pages within a few clicks of the homepage so they’re easy to crawl and reach.
- Fix broken internal links, which waste crawl budget and frustrate users.
A common failure is orphan pages — pages with no internal links pointing to them — which search engines struggle to find and rank. Auditing for orphans and thin internal linking is a quick win; get a free audit to see where your structure leaks.
