Heatmap
Definition
A heatmap is a visual representation of user behavior on a web page, using color to show where visitors click, move, and scroll — warm colors mark high activity and cool colors mark low activity. It helps teams see how real users interact with a page so they can diagnose usability and conversion problems that analytics numbers alone can't explain.
Why it matters
Analytics tells you what happened — bounce rate, time on page — but not why. A heatmap fills that gap by showing the actual behavior behind the numbers: the button nobody clicks, the section where everyone stops scrolling, the non-clickable element people keep tapping because it looks like a link.
For SEO and conversion work, that behavioral evidence is decisive. A page can rank well and still fail if visitors can’t find the next step, and engagement signals — how long people stay, how far they scroll — increasingly matter for how pages perform. Heatmaps turn a vague sense that “this page underperforms” into a specific, fixable diagnosis: the call to action sits below where most visitors ever scroll, so move it up. That’s the difference between guessing at a redesign and targeting the one change that moves the number.
How it works
Heatmap tools track user interactions with a small script and aggregate them across many sessions into a color overlay. Different heatmap types answer different questions.
| Type | Shows | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Click map | Where users click or tap | CTA and link performance |
| Scroll map | How far down users read | Content and fold placement |
| Move map | Where cursors hover | Attention and reading path |
The workflow is straightforward: collect enough sessions for a representative sample, read the map against your goal for the page, form a hypothesis, then A/B test the fix rather than acting on the visual alone. Pair heatmaps with your ranking and conversion data so you’re optimizing pages that already earn search traffic — that’s where behavioral fixes pay back fastest.
