Definition
In marketing, geographic refers to targeting and segmenting an audience by physical location — country, state, region, city, ZIP code, or radius around a point — so that messaging, offers, and ad spend match where a buyer actually is.
Why it matters
Location is one of the cheapest, highest-signal ways to focus a B2B budget. A buyer’s geography shapes their currency, language, regulations, time zone, and often their buying urgency — so treating a global audience as one undifferentiated pool wastes spend on people you can’t serve and mutes the message for those you can. For B2B teams selling into specific regions, geographic targeting keeps demos scheduled in working hours, ad dollars inside serviceable territories, and compliance claims accurate for each market. It also sharpens reporting: pipeline by region tells you where product-market fit is real versus where a lucky click inflated the numbers.
How it works
Geographic marketing operates on two levels — segmentation (grouping your market by location) and targeting (choosing which groups to spend against). Common inputs include:

Platforms detect location through IP address, device GPS, billing address, or self-reported form fields, then let you include or exclude areas and bid differently by region. In practice, tie geographic targeting to intent: a fintech selling only in the EU should exclude non-serviceable regions from paid campaigns and localize landing pages for each core market. Layer it onto other segmentation — firmographics, behavior — rather than using it alone, and connect the resulting leads to your CRM so region becomes a reportable dimension.
